Shooting at a Coffee Roaster’s

coffee cooling after roasting

I only went in intending to try out another little cafe, tucked away on a back street outside of Chiangmai. As it turns out, that little cafe is really a coffee roaster who happens to also sell their roasts. As I talked to the owner, she seemed quite open to looking around, and when I asked if I could take a few shots, she did not even hesitate.

The roaster was running. After the roast, the hot beans were dumped on to the metal grill where they could cool. And to assist the cooling, metal arms stir the beans to keep them moving, because if they stop the beans can get burn spots. Anyway, cooliing rack is what is pictured in this photo.

It was already low light, so I wanted to play with blur. On top of that, I had these arms swirling around in a circle. So, I was not interested in some kind of standard straight line blur. I wanted circular motion. I have loads of shots that did not work, but a few of them have a great sense of motion.

Personally, I think this photo, if taken alone, is nothing much, but as a part of a greater shoot, it could add a different perspective. I was only playing around, but I was shooting as if I needed to create adverts or product shots for this roaster. It could really add a different dimension to other, more standard shots (I have several angles of the drum roaster itself, but those are not so inspiring). Just having fun.
