Mother of Pearl Sunset

Sunset in Chiangmai Thailand

I was completely captivated by this sunset and had all kinds of grief capturing it in a photo. For quite a long time, the area just above the setting sun was a milky bright and even had a small spectrum in it, like a mini-rainbow. All I could think of was mother of pearl. It was like looking at a giant clam shell in the sky.

All my photos were either too bright or too dark. I played with spot metering and not spot metering. I went to manual settings. I tried some exposure compensation to trick the camera’s metering system. Nothing seemed to work.

I really like this photo, but the almost black clouds were actually quite well lit in real life. The problem was that capturing the mother of pearl look needed the sun to still be up (not yet set), and the camera just could not deal with that bright sun still in the photo. So, I feel like I captured some of the look I wanted, but have to say that it was much better when viewed with the human eye.

Was there supposed to be a picture in this one, or is it there and my computer just can’t see it?

Ok, got that fixed. Of course it was human error: I had left out one little letter. So picky, these computers!

At first I only saw the top section of this photo and thought it was black and white! Good contrast I guess.

That is a bit why I liked this sunset. What color is mother of pearl? Hard to say, and in the same way, this sunset was really hard to peg down as any one color. It was very strange looking, and that is why I liked it so much.
