Awning Carving for Dong Bridge

elder man carves wood with hand tool

I love to watch the patient progress made when the Dong people work with wood. There is little fancy about the process. With the exception of large saws to cut the tree trunks into planks, rarely will any electric tools be used.

Young and old were at work on this day, everyone from children who cannot yet speak but want to be a part of the work their fathers and grandfathers are doing, to the older men, as you see here. It is the perfect combination of experience and energy. This is how culture is passed down.
